Many people are unaware that essential oils have been around for thousands of years. In fact, they are known to be some of the oldest and most powerful substances on earth!

THE USE OF PEPPERMINT DATES BACK TO ANCIENT ROMAN AND GREEK CULTURE WHEN PEPPERMINT WAS USED AS DÉCOR AND AN AROMATIC IN ADDITION TO BEING A POPULAR FLAVORING IN SAUCES AND FOODS.

THE USE OF LAVENDER CAN BE TRACED BACK CENTURIES TO ANCIENT ROMAN AND GREEK TEXTS AND THE BIBLE WHERE IT WAS USED ALONG WITH ALOE, SPICES AND HERBS TO PREPARE TEMPLES FOR RELIGIOUS RITES.

LEMON, ONE OF THE MOST WELL KNOWN AND LOVED OILS, HAS BEEN USED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD FOR CENTURIES TO WARD OFF INSECTS, DISINFECT, CLEAN AND SCENT CLOTHING AND FOR ITS UPLIFTING SCENT.

This is one of the most vital things you must know about essential oils – not all essential oils are created equally. In fact, most of them are worthless to your health and potentially toxic. There are four grades of essential oils:

1. Synthetic and Altered Oils

→ created in laboratory and lowest grade of oil

2. Natural and “Pure” Oils

→ overly processed so they lose healing compounds

→ most commonly sold type of essential oils

3. Wellness Grade Essential Oils

→ steam distilled with healing compounds

→ the negative is that they may or may not have been sprayed with pesticides

4. Certified Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

→ the highest grade of essential oils with greatest healing properties

→ medicinal oils that can be used as plant-based medicine

THE POWER OF THE SENSES & AROMATHERAPY.

The human senses are incredibly powerful and greatly affect thought, mood and many other brain functions and work together to help support our perception of our surroundings. Undoubtedly, one of the most powerful senses is the sense of smell.

What Are Essential Oils?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

How Do I Use Essential Oils?

Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

Aromatic

Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.

The molecules in essential oils are small enough to pass into your body and cells to support health and healing.

Putting 15 drops of essential oils in a diffuser or in warm water is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to use essential oils.

Here are some ways to diffuse essential oils:

• To clean the air add in essential oils of lemon and the purify blend

• To improve energy add in peppermint

• To reduce a headache and relax add in lavender

Topical

Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.

Some essential oils can be placed directly on the skin, but some cannot and should be mixed with a carrier oil. Some of the best carrier oils include coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and pomegranate seed oil. Simply take 3-5 drops of the essential oil and put directly onto your skin. If it needs a carrier oil mix 3-5 drops of essential oils with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil like coconut oil.

Topical application is one of the ways you can experience the benefits of doTERRA essential oils. This form of application is unique because it allows for localized effects in the area of the application in addition to providing whole body support. Additionally, you can use essential oils topically when you want an easy way to target specific areas on your body.

Dilution Basics

Dilution is a process in which essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil—a pure vegetable oil that helps “carry” the essential oil onto the skin. There are many benefits to dilution, including increasing the surface area of absorption, enhancing absorption through dry skin, and preventing sensitivity responses.

doTERRA’s carrier oil of choice is Fractionated Coconut Oil due to its long shelf life and lightweight texture.

Classifications of Essential Oils for Topical Use

Neat: Oils categorized as “neat” can be applied topically without dilution because of their exceptionally mild chemistry. Frankincense, Lavender, Melaleuca, Melissa, and Sandalwood are good examples of “neat” essential oils.

Dilute: Oils in this category have potent chemistry and should be diluted with a carrier oil before topical application in every case. “Dilute” oils include Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Oregano, and Thyme.

Sensitive: “Sensitive” oils are those that should be diluted before use on young or sensitive skin. Bergamot, Black Pepper, Eucalyptus, Ginger, and Peppermint are examples of “sensitive” oils.

Application Safety

Although unusual, occasionally it is possible to have a sensitivity response to an essential oil. This occurs when there is heightened reactivity of an essential oil that may result in an unwanted response in the body or on the skin. Awareness of your body and how it reacts to different essential oils, amounts applied, and location applications can help minimize risk and ensure safe usage.

Essential Safety Tips:

Citrus oils contain a unique category of photosensitive compounds called furocoumarins, so it is important to avoid exposure to sunlight, sunlamps, or other sources of UV light for up to 12 hours after topical application of these oils.

More is not always better! Essential oils are very potent, so a little goes a long way. Start with 1–2 drops and then increase the dosage as necessary.

Dilute, dilute, dilute! Dilution in no way diminishes the efficacy of essential oils and offers many benefits that can enhance your application experience. Conduct a simple sensitivity test when trying a new oil by applying a small amount of essential oil to an inconspicuous area. Check the spot each hour for several hours to ensure no sensitivity has occurred.
Face: Use essential oil as part of your regular skin care regimen to beautify the skin and promote a clear, healthy looking complexion.

Neck/Forehead/Temples: These areas are good to target feelings of tension.

Abdomen:
Application of essential oils, especially over major digestive organs.

Arms/Legs/Back: Massage onto the arms, wrists, legs, feet, or back after physical activity.

Roof of the Mouth (Soft Palette)/Base of the Skull: Applying oils to these areas is an excellent way to help transform your mood and balance your emotions.

Chest: Rubbing oils onto the chest promotes feelings of clear breathing.

Bottoms of Feet: The feet have large pores that rapidly absorb essential oils, making this an ideal application site for generalized effect. Apply and massage in 2–4 drops of essential oil.

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application:

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath

Baths: 15 drops mixed with 1/2 cup of epsom salt makes a fantastic aromatherapy bath. This can help improve circulation, relieve sore muscles, soothe skin, open airways, relax the body and improve sleep. Use soothing oils like eucalyptus and lavender.

  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area

Compresses: 10 drops per 4 oz. of water. Soak cloth and apply for bruises, infections, aches and pains. Peppermint is one of the best for muscle aches and lavender is great for infections.

  • Mix with water and use as a mouth and throat rinse
  •  Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to the skin

Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.

Research suggests that many oils are more effective when taken orally. But only pure therapeutic grade oils should be taken this way. Dosage and dilution is dependent on age, size and health of individual. If you have more in-depth questions consult your nutritionist or physician.

Suggested internal use methods include:

• Put several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water

• Add 1-3 drops to a glass of water, almond milk or coconut milk

• Put 1-3 drops to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil then consume

• Add 1-3 drops to 1 teaspoon of raw honey

• Drop directly under tongue with certain oils

Essential oils are both exciting and promising when it comes to taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, the positive effects of essential oils are boundless.

That’s why you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You’ll want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity.

THE DōTERRA STORY

In the spring of 2008, a group of health-care and business professionals who shared profound personal experiences with the life-enhancing benefits of essential oils came together with a common vision of bringing a new standard of therapeutic-grade essential oils to the world. They wanted something different that would appeal to all people—from those who knew nothing of essential oils to those who were considered experts in the field.

They concluded that, with hard work, commitment, and the help of others with similar passion and vision, they could and would create a new paradigm for essential oils. With that conviction, they organized a company and named it “dōTERRA®,” a Latin derivative meaning “Gift of the Earth.” The first offering of dōTERRA essential oils—25 single oils and 10 oil blends—was introduced for sale on April 25, 2008, to the acclaim of essential oil experts and product enthusiasts who immediately recognized the superior quality of dōTERRA therapeutic-grade essential oils.

In addition to the ongoing development of new essential oils and proprietary essential oil blends, dōTERRA product offerings include nutritional, spa, and healthy living products based on essential oil technologies and a comprehensive wellness philosophy.

DōTERRA products are sold exclusively through Wellness Advocates. Working from home, these advocates introduce, educate about, and sell dōTERRA products in their local markets through person-to-person contact and globally through personalized web shopping sites.
